Maheshwar Narayan Sinha is a self-taught artist and author from Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. Since childhood, he has been drawn depicting the world around him and the use of color. “Back then, I would depict birds, houses, the rising sun, trees, rivers, and the sky without much vision." As he grew older, themes began to emerge in his artworks, yet his style remained unconfined to any specific "ism." Sinha’s work is a fusion of figuration and abstraction, characterized by unique lines and forms. The inner essence of his art is complex, often exploring questions of culture, tradition, and wisdom. Themes in his work include nature (birds and animals), isolated male and female figures, and male-female unity, which are drawn from ancient Indian classics. Sinha states, "My art reflects traditional values, with gestures, colors, and forms rooted in Indian soil and inspired by our epics and Vedas." His artistic journey has taken him to exhibitions across India and internationally in places like Dubai, South Korea, Austria, London, and Venice, and his work is featured in literary-art journals worldwide.

When it comes to the influence of digital platforms on his creation and sharing of works, Sinha says, "The digital world is highly accessible, which is both an advantage and a drawback, as it may confuse audiences. Viewing art digitally can’t compare to experiencing it in person, but online platforms can still introduce viewers to real artwork." Around 2002 - 2003, his work was selected for a solo exhibition in an Indian gallery and in an international competition, and since then, he realized he wanted to pursue art professionally. 

Inspiration and Themes of Artistic Creation

Sinha reveals that nature and women have always inspired him. "I am fascinated by isolated figures that appear integrated from within and attuned to nature's rhythm." His art explores the concept of male-female unity from ancient Indian classics. He takes pride in his traditional approach, drawing on the essence of the soil and the gestures of his characters, which evoke universal themes of origin and unity. Sinha’s tropical background has made him partial to bright colors, and he relates most closely to the Impressionist style of art.

Regarding how to balance the personal and the political in his artworks, Sinha believes, "Art teaches me balance, bringing individual expression together with broader, impersonal themes. This alignment happens naturally in my creative process."

Views on AI-Generated Art

As for AI-generated art and its place in the contemporary art landscape, Sinha says, "I believe AI-generated art will coexist with traditional art, though it may generate 'noise.' If AI can quickly replicate elements of Van Gogh, Gauguin, or Picasso, would that piece have the same value? Emotion, not technique, is the core of art, something AI cannot create. AI won’t prompt us to ask questions—only we, as humans, can do that." He thinks AI-generated art will coexist with traditional art. However, the core of art is emotion, not technique, which AI cannot produce.

Sinha points out, "Artists now have access to advanced tools, but our primary need is inspiration, not technique. Technology allows us to share art worldwide with a click, but I believe we must protect the soul of art from the risks of over-reliance on technology, as any imbalance could harm artistic sentiment."

The Future of Traditional Galleries

Facing the new challenges that physical galleries are encountering (post-pandemic shifts, digital alternatives), Sinha firmly believes, "Digital alternatives won’t replace physical galleries, but for galleries to thrive, we must address challenges by reducing profit margins to make art affordable for middle- and lower-income groups. This requires a collective approach."
