Introduction and Artistic Background

When asked to introduce himself and give an overview of his artistic background, Alemayehu Regasa Wariyo shared, "I started drawing at an early age, around eight, when I became interested in creating flowers for the Ethiopian New Year, 'inkutatashe,' and making drawings based on our academic science exercise books. My classmates began to see me as an artist, and this acceptance inspired me to pursue art further. This path led me to the Fine Arts and Design program at Addis Ababa University in 2004. My graduation project focused on the theme of 'childhood,' a theme I continue to explore, as I find it limitless for creativity. I have exhibited my work on both local and international levels."

Inspiration and Themes

On what inspires his work, Wariyo said, "My inspiration comes from children, and my work revolves around the theme of 'childhood.' I am drawn to the freedom, simplicity, and openness in a child’s character, and this is the spirit I strive to capture in my creative work."

These opportunities have been essential in helping me pursue art professionally."

Balancing Personal and Political in Artwork

Regarding how he balances personal and political aspects in his art, he explained, "There is a child in all of us. This common ground allows me to balance my personal interests with social or political interests, which I express through my use of color, technique, and ideas."

The Merging of Art, Technology, and AI

When asked about his thoughts on AI - generated art and its place in the contemporary art landscape, he believes, "AI - generated art is, for me, just another form of expressing feelings, and I believe it can coexist with more traditional forms of art." On the merging of art and technology, Wariyo shared, "Art has always driven the birth of new technology, and technology, in turn, inspires new artistic styles. This dynamic is what keeps art evolving."

Closing Thoughts

Wariyo believes that "Art is a process in which the artist and their feelings meet," and his aim is to create artwork that resonates with the interests of his audience.
