Introduction and Artistic Background

Tom Chambers identifies as a visual artist, photographer, and digital art pioneer. He has “been involved in digital/new media art and technology since 1997,” and his work “explores digital manipulation regarding Suprematism, Geometric Abstraction, Minimalism, Color Field, and other experimental techniques.” When asked about his artistic experiences, Chambers stated, “I have exhibited my work extensively around the world, and I have been involved in a number of artist-in-residency programs. I have also taught and lectured on digital/new media art and technology. My work is recognized for its innovative use of digital techniques and its exploration of societal issues."

Inspiration and Themes of Artwork

The inspiration for Chambers’ work can be found in Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism and Geometric Abstraction. He notes that “the pixel as abstraction is at the root of my exploration.” One key term to the identity of Chambers’ art is "Pixelscapes". The word is “often used to describe a type of digital art that uses pixels, the smallest unit of a digital image. This term is also associated with my work,” said Chambers. "I create series of artworks under this namesake, where I use pixel manipulation techniques to create abstract, geometric compositions."

The Intersection of Art and Technology

Regarding how the rise of digital platforms has influenced the way he creates and shares his work, Tom Chambers said, "The influence is great since I work digitally these days. [...] I began working digitally in 1997, and I founded one of the first online art galleries for digital creation and manipulation.” However, when it comes to Artificial Intelligence, he believes that “AI - generated art is fascinating to look at, but I would never exhibit this approach as my own.” For Chambers, “Technology is simply another tool to help the artist make art.”

Balancing the Personal in Artwork

Regarding how he balances the personal and the political in his artwork, he said, “At times, my work is very personal and based on my existence [...] particularly with the medium of photography since I began my artistic pursuit with this medium.” Tom was handed a camera in the 1970s and shortly thereafter, began to explore documentary photography. “I exhibited my work as I managed photo departments for Texas Tech University (Health Sciences Center), University of Rhode Island, and the City of Providence.”

The Future Role of Traditional Galleries

As physical galleries face new challenges in the digital age, when asked what role he believes these galleries will play moving forward, he firmly stated, "I believe traditional galleries will always play a significant role for the simple reason that they provide physical space for direct contact with the viewer.”

Final Thoughts and Words of Wisdom

Tom R. Chambers’ artistic journey exemplifies the ever-evolving relationship between creativity and technology. His innovative approach to digital art, rooted in abstraction and geometric exploration, continues to inspire and challenge traditional artistic norms. As he pushes the boundaries of digital expression while maintaining a deep respect for traditional galleries, Chambers serves as a testament to the enduring power of artistic vision. His advice to other artists out there is to “pursue what you feel as an artist, and don't let the naysayers get you down.”
