Pleiades Gallery announces an open call for art. Pleiades is one of the oldest and most well-established galleries in NYC. Founded in Soho in 1974 by a group of like-minded artists, the gallery has hosted some of the world’s finest artists including founding member William Behnken, and Renee e. Rubin--both of whom have works in MoMA, the Met, and Brooklyn Museum. Over the years the gallery has hosted notable presentations and panel discussions that have included such luminaries as John Cage, Christo, Merce Cunningham, Lucy Lippard, and art critic Harold Rosenberg.
Today, the gallery is located in Chelsea’s Landmark Arts Building, just steps away from the High Line, situated among the most prestigious galleries in Manhattan. Pleiades has become a Chelsea institution with high standards that are continuously refreshed by new artists representing a diversity of styles, ages, and viewpoints.
DURING THIS OPEN CALL: Both established and emerging artists may apply to become gallery members to have their works exhibited in group and solo exhibitions.
Each member is entitled to a 4-week solo exhibit every 18 -24 months, plus at least one group show every 12 months. Dates of solo shows are determined by lottery.
Pleiades is governed and operated by its artist members, who meet monthly and uphold the mission to create, maintain and perpetuate a community of highly talented and committed artists, with a handsome, professional gallery for the exhibition of their works. They seek to:
Provide a fresh alternative to the constraints and dictates of the commercial gallery system;
Encourage the highest standards of imagination and creativity;
Foster a collegial atmosphere for art discussions, explorations and debates;
Widely publicize the Gallery’s events, news and accomplishments;
Stimulate and stir the sensibilities of the visiting public, art lovers, collectors and critics;
Encourage the sale of the exhibited art works.
